Checking your tire pressure is something that every driver should do regularly. Your tires need to be correctly inflated to remain in good condition for as long as possible. Over or under-inflated tires will suffer additional wear or damage as you drive. This additional wear means your tires may need replacement sooner than otherwise necessary. As your Mazda dealer, we'd like to give you some advice on the correct way to check tire pressure. Some Advice From Your Mazda Dealer: How To Correctly Check Tire Pressure Before You Check the Tires Make Sure Your Car Is Securely Parked This can be easy to overlook, but you'll be kneeling by your wheels to check the pressure. Ensure your car is safely parked on a flat surface, switched off, and the parking brake is on. No one want's their car to roll backward. Don't Check the Pressure if You've Been Driving If you've been driving, the friction from the road surface heats the air inside the tires. Heat increases the tire pressure, which will give you an incorrect reading. Always wait three hours after driving for your tires to cool and the pressure to equalize. more Checking the Tire Pressure Confirm the Correct Tire Pressure The tire pressure for your Mazda is listed in your car's manual, and it's also displayed inside the door jamb of the passenger front door. You'll see different pressure listed for the front and rear tires. Write these pressures down so you can compare them to your actual tire pressure. Check Each Tire Remove the valve cap from the first tire and connect your tire pressure gauge. The gauge will either display the pressure on the screen or a slide-out section. Write the tire pressure down and replace the valve cap. Repeat this step for the other three tires. Compare the Results Once you have all your tire pressure readings, you can compare them to the recommended readings you wrote down earlier. A difference of 1-2 PSI between the recommended and actual pressures is no reason to worry. Your tires lose this amount of pressure naturally each month as the pressure inside the tires tries to equalize the external pressure. If one or more of your tires show a greater pressure drop, this is a cause for concern. There are many reasons why a tire could lose pressure. The affected tire could have a damaged valve stem or a slow leak. The problem could also be as simple as a valve cap that wasn't correctly tightened. If any of your tires are lower than they should be, or you saw any damage to the tires while you were checking the air, this is a problem. An overheating car can cause serious, even irreparable, damage to your engine. Your engine is a naturally hot environment due to combustion and friction from hundreds of moving parts. Your Mazda has a highly-efficient cooling system to keep the temperature under control. As your Mazda dealer, we'd like to tell you about some of the causes of your car overheating. more Is Your Car Overheating? Visit Your Mazda Dealer Today Damaged Radiator Your radiator takes in engine heat and exchanges it for cooler air via heat exchange. Liquid coolant is the medium used by your engine to absorb the heat and transport it to the radiator. Radiators are subject to constant high temperatures and pressures, and these conditions can take their toll. A damaged radiator has a serious impact on your cooling system. Radiators are composed of aluminum and plastic, and over time they can get damaged and spring a leak. Coolant will rapidly leak out of a damaged radiator, and your engine temperature will climb dramatically. Our technicians will examine your radiator and repair it if possible. If the radiator is too damaged, we can install a new one for you. Jammed Thermostat Coolant is released and circulates through your engine in response to rising engine temperatures. Your engine has a preset point, usually around 185F, when the cooling system is activated. The thermostat is a small component that controls the flow of the coolant. When your engine temperature reaches the preset point, the thermostat opens and releases coolant. If your thermostat fails, it can jam open or closed. A thermostat that jams closed won't release any coolant. The lack of coolant will cause your engine to rapidly overheat. A thermostat that jams open will prevent your engine from reaching its optimum operating temperature. Your car will use more fuel due to the colder engine temperature. Worn Radiator When you're driving, coolant circulates through your engined under high pressure. The coolant absorbs heat and transports it to the radiator for cooling. Once inside the radiator, the coolant enters rows of thin aluminum tubes. Airflow through the grille removes the heat, and the cooled coolant is recycled through the system again. This cooling system works perfectly when your car is moving. When you're stationary, however, airflow is greatly restricted. When your engine is idling, a small fan at the rear of the radiator will activate. This fan blows across the back of the tubes and forces the heat out through the grille. If the fan is damaged, it won't be able to remove the heat, and your engine temperature will rise. Overheating can result in damaged cylinders, a blown head gasket, or warped pistons. The catalytic converter is designed to convert toxic chemicals from combustion into less harmful ones. This conversion plays a major role in reducing pollution from automobile exhaust smoke. In time, your converter can become blocked or damaged. As your Mazda dealer, we can repair or replace the converter for you. The chemical reactions that convert dangerous chemicals into harmless ones can generate byproducts like carbon. These byproducts can block the converter and prevent exhaust gases from leaving your engine. A blockage in the converter means the exhaust gases will be forced back into your engine. The exhaust gases will alter the fuel-air mix in your engine, and the fuel-rich environment can quickly choke your engine. The reason for this is the spark plugs aren't able to fire without enough air. The lack of air will prevent combustion, and your engine will stop. Our technicians will examine your converter and clear the blockage. Black Smoke Black smoke from the exhaust means that your converter isn't working as it should. This smoke will have a strong rotten egg smell, as it contains hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, and other dangerous and toxic chemicals. The most likely cause for these chemicals not being converted is damage to your converter. A converter can become worn through use, as it does work under high pressure and at extreme temperatures. The converter's working conditions will gradually damage it and reduce its ability to convert dangerous gases. The converter can also be damaged by combustion problems, low-grade fuel, or other engine issues. We will find the cause of the problem and fix it for you. Check Engine Light Comes On The check engine light is connected to a variety of sensors throughout your engine. These sensors monitor critical engine components and provide information for your car's computer. They also record any disturbance or problem with a component. A failing converter can cause the check engine light to illuminate for several reasons, and one of these is a lack of oxygen in the exhaust gases. The oxygen sensors in your exhaust monitor the level of oxygen that enters the exhaust. A low level of oxygen means inefficient combustion. Inefficient combustion will increase your fuel costs, as the lack of air means that most fuel won't burn and will be wasted.
